Eureka, IL

The German word "heiter" is translated to mean calm, peaceful, happy and joyful. "Heiterland," the new special care unit at the Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka, provides that kind of atmosphere for its residents with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Instead of using a traditional medical model, the 23-bed unit incorporates an activity-based design to support the special emphasis on a highly individualized approach of care. This nurturing environment is intended to preserve dignity and independent functioning as well as minimize the occurrence of catastrophic reaction.

Residents can engage in a full range of activities using the unit's focal points. A working kitchen allows residents to continue comforting daily routines, such as cleaning, dishwashing, and baking. Several intimate dining areas provide a homelike atmosphere for meals. A gazebo-like space encourages social interaction, and a wide walking path winds around the unit for residents who like to wander.

Particular attention was paid to the selection of finishes. Contrasting colors help residents negotiate spaces and furniture. All patterns are subtle and soothing. Indirect lighting is used throughout the unit to reduce glare. Even the artwork has texture and dimension.

Careful planning and design assure that this special care unit allows residents the opportunity to be active and content.
