This 17- bed addition is a special unit designed for residents with dementia. Although the unit fully complies with the Skilled Nursing Facilities Act, the residential character so necessary to the comfort and dignity of the residents is still intact.

The bedroom plan provides each resident with his/her own private space, a window, visiting area and access to and from their space without disturbing others. Low partitions and furnishings divide the living/dining spaces into a series of intimate areas that will minimize distractions and help reduce agitation in the residents. A low counter for staff and resident social interaction replaces the institutional nurse's station. Nursing functions and charting take place within closed rooms.

The kitchen is an important space to residents, just as it was in their former homes. Under staff supervision the residents can bake, wash dishes, brew coffee and socialize. All appliances are controlled by a master safety switch.

The brightness required for older adults with declining vision is provided without the intensity and glare of direct lighting. Indirect lighting is provided by both clere-story windows and fixtures.

The phased plan also includes the construction of a new kitchen for the entire facility, dining rooms, relocation of the existing kitchen, and renovation of other interior spaces.
