Closed Maximum Security Correctional Facility
Tamms, Illinois
The Closed Maximum Security Unit (CMAX) is located on a split campus (shared with a minimum security unit). The maximum security component has eight residential pods that house up to 480 inmates. Each pod is designed around an elevated control station observing six double tier cellblocks. Each cellblock houses ten inmates. An individual outdoor exercise yard is provided per cellblock. In addition to these maximum security housing units, there is a single housing unit (POD J) that consists of 2 cellblocks with 10 double occupancy cells each for a total of 20 beds. This unit includes larger dayroom facilities, multipurpose spaces and access to a larger outdoor exercise yard. Like the other housing units, this housing pod is monitored by an elevated control station.
The Inmate Services Building features a courtroom for Federal hearings and teleconferencing facilities for other judicial related meetings. It also contains a health services unit for medical, dental, infirmary and mental health treatment. General inmate services (intake/processing, visiting and the central library) occupy the remainder of the building. |
