Downtown Education Center

Illinois Central College has a vision for its Downtown Education Center - to conveniently serve two distinct user groups, members of the Peoria business community and residents with education deficiencies. LZT was asked to help begin fulfilling that vision by designing 21,000 sq. ft. of space to complete the upper two floors of ICC's downtown building.
To reach the business community, LZT created a facility for the Institute for Personal and Professional Development, featuring a 75-seat teleconference center that electronically creates a college without walls. State-of-the-art equipment includes podium controls for overhead RGB video projector, slide projection, concealed front and rear ceiling-mounted cameras, and various monitors.
Students have access to the latest in remedial education and vocational retraining through the 50-seat learning resource laboratory. Basic skills are advanced at reading tables, a reference area, staff stations, study carrels and computer terminals. The library is linked to both the main campus library and network systems.
LZT provided a variety of computer labs to support the center, including a 35-station lab featuring a full LAN system with printing and computer projection capabilities, and a specialized lab for word processing and desktop publishing applications. To provide instruction in computer aided design (CADD) and micro-circuitry, a third lab is equipped with computers and electronics at 20 flexible learning stations.
With a significant percentage of single parent students, a day care center was provided in the center. Located in busy downtown Peoria, LZT designed a rooftop play area supported by a concrete deck built over the building's roof. |
