School Street and University Street Parking Decks

Facing a critical parking shortage, Illinois State University commissioned LZT to design and administer construction of the School Street and University Street parking decks. The tight schedule and the need to use winter months for construction prompted the use of precast, prestressed concrete. The resulting decks are user friendly ... with long, clear, well-lit spans that make parking easier and safer. The use of precast concrete panels resulted in greater economy and quality control. The sculptural facade and contrasting aluminum and glass stairwells and elevators earned the School Street Deck a Design Award for Excellence from the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute as well as an Award for Excellence from the Institutional and Municipal Parking Congress.
Security was a high priority to the University. All deck levels feature closed circuit TV cameras monitored from the University police center. Deck patrons have instant 2-way communication with the police center through emergency call stations located on all levels. Signs posted at all entrances alert those who enter the decks that they are being monitored.
The School Street Deck improves traffic control in congested areas of the campus, with pedestrian traffic flowing in and out of the campus side of the deck and vehicular traffic directed to the opposite side of the structure. Parents and students appreciate this convenience during the moving-in and moving-out periods when traffic around nearby Watterson Towers is particularly congested. The University Street Deck, located across from Bone Student Union, provides ample parking for special events at the Union.
The two decks now provide 1,063 parking spaces for students, faculty and staff. The University Street deck is designed for horizontal and vertical expansion to accommodate a growing need for additional parking at Illinois State University. |
