Peoria County Jail (PCJAIL)
Peoria, IL

The Peoria County Adult Detention Center is three times larger than the previous County Jail and houses three times the number of inmates. Yet the jail requires no additional staffing and is more secure.

The jail houses 225 inmates in single occupancy cells. There are 16 intake cells, 10 special management cells and another 80 work release bunks in six dormitories. 24 cell blocks contain either 7, 9, 13 or 15 cells each. The podular design with various sizes of cell blocks allows inmates to be easily classified by factors such as sex, type of offense, status (awaiting trial, awaiting or serving sentence) and previous criminal history.

Each control station allows full observation of four separate cell blocks and an outdoor exercise yard. During the third shift operation a single corrections officer can move between two control stations to observe and control a complete pod of eight cell blocks. Maximum efficiency with minimum staff was a prime design consideration.

The New Center is sited and designed to accommodate expansion that could add 3 pods of 75 cells each. The podular design of the facility allows new housing to be either direct or indirect supervision.
