The John C. Proctor Life Care Facility is a continuing care retirement community. The health center was designed and constructed on a medical model that was common to nursing homes built in the 1970's. The emphasis was on the provision of medical care with little attention paid to the social needs of the resident and the associated support space. Today's model needed to be much different.

The present home was grossly undersized, by today's needs, lacking adequate space for social activities, dining, and patient privacy. LZT completed a comprehensive master plan which established the phased development of a new 59-bed health care center, a conversion and renovation of the present health care center into 16 assisted living units, and a community center. In addition, mechanical and electrical systems needed to be replaced, and the facility needed to be brought up to code requirements.

Phase I design is based on a "cluster" concept where groups of 11-13 residents form a neighborhood. Each neighborhood shares a common living area, CNA desk, central shower and support spaces. This not only enhances the quality of care, but provides operational efficiencies. The design provides each person with privacy and dignity. Each resident will have his or her own space with window, closet and dresser.

The design meets the programmatic needs of the population. The neighborhood concept allows the facility to more fully address the diverse needs of the existing population (i.e. dementia, medical conditions, etc.) within a small facility.
