A new alternative care system for the elderly is the assisted living facility. Assisted living provides an exciting choice for senior citizens who are able to maintain their independence with just a little assistance in their daily lives. LZT Associates designed a 6,000 sf addition to meet standards for 19 skilled nursing beds. Sunny Acres Home used this unit as an assisted living unit to test their market.
This unit consists of ten large private resident rooms, living room, office, multipurpose room for dining, crafts and chapel area, a utility room and a large deck. All furniture has been thoughtfully designed to meet residents' needs for independence, individuality, privacy, and mobility. LZT created a sense of "home" with the use of appropriate colors, fabrics and lighting.
The number of residents with some form of dementia is increasing. A later phase of work designated sixteen rooms of the existing facility to be and converted to a special needs unit called the "Community of Acceptance." The adjacent laundry and storage spaces were converted into living areas, including an activity and dining room, therapeutic kitchen and a work space for the program director. The primary objective of the new unit is to improve the quality of life in the regular facility and to provide a more secure, peaceful environment for confused residents.
A separate laundry building was constructed, resulting in greater fire safety and infection control. Interior finishes, wall and floor coverings were replaced in all the public areas of the existing facility to provide fresh, familiar surroundings. Completed 1996. $736,800 |
